Two main routes
- Commissioned officers. Candidates join through courses such as the Pakistan Military Academy, Pakistan Naval Academy or PAF Academy after intermediate or a degree, depending on the course. Some specialist commissions are open to graduates and professionals such as doctors and engineers.
- Enlisted and technical careers. Soldiers, sailors and airmen join after matric or intermediate depending on the trade, with physical, medical and educational tests.
Typical selection stages
- Registration and initial test, which can include academic, intelligence and English tests.
- Medical and physical fitness checks.
- Multi-day interviews and group tasks for commissioned courses, where officer-like qualities are assessed.
- Final merit and joining instructions.
How to prepare
- Build fitness gradually: running, push-ups, sit-ups and stamina. Check your body mass index with the BMI calculator, bearing in mind that official standards are set in the advertisement and measured by the medical board.
- Practise English, general knowledge and basic mathematics.
- Confirm the age limit on the cut-off date with the age calculator.
- Keep documents ready: CNIC, domicile, educational certificates and photographs.
Avoid recruitment fraud
The armed forces do not sell seats and do not ask for payment from individuals. Be careful of social media pages or agents that promise a place for money. Apply only through the official websites.

Physical preparation plan
Start at least three months before testing. Alternate running days with strength days, and add stretching. Track your progress weekly, keep sleeping seven to eight hours, and eat a balanced diet. Check your BMI with the BMI calculator; the medical board decides final fitness, but being in a healthy range removes one worry.
Academic and intelligence tests
Expect English, general knowledge, basic maths and verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Practise with timed sets, review mistakes and keep a vocabulary list. A weekly timetable from the study planner helps you cover all areas, and the Pomodoro timer builds the habit of focused practice.
Eligibility details to confirm
