How government hiring in Pakistan usually works
- Advertisement. The commission or department publishes posts, qualifications, age limits, quotas and the closing date.
- Application. You apply online or through the method stated, and pay the official fee if any.
- Screening and test. Posts commonly use a written test, sometimes a computer-based test, and for some posts a physical or skills test.
- Interview. Shortlisted candidates are called for an interview and document verification.
- Merit list and offer. Appointments follow merit and quota rules, then medical and police verification.
Application checklist
- Read the whole advertisement, especially qualification, age limit, domicile rule and closing date.
- Check your age on the cut-off date with the age calculator.
- Prepare scanned documents in the required size and format before the last day.
- Apply early. Websites are slow near deadlines.
- Keep a copy of your application form, fee receipt and roll number slip.
How to avoid job scams
- Genuine government recruitment never requires payment to an individual, a mobile wallet account or a "WhatsApp agent".
- Be wary of ads that promise a guaranteed job, ask for your bank PIN or ask for fees to "confirm" a seat.
- Verify any advertisement on the official website of the organisation.
- Report fake recruitment to the FIA cyber crime wing or the organisation concerned.

Understanding basic pay scales
Government posts are graded from BS-1 to BS-22. Entry-level support staff start around BS-1 to BS-5, clerks, teachers and similar staff sit in the middle grades, and officers in BS-17 and above. The scale decides your minimum qualification, pay and promotion path. Check the grade in the advertisement and estimate the take-home pay with the salary calculator.
Preparing for recruitment tests
- Collect the syllabus and past papers from the commission or testing service.
- Divide the syllabus into subjects and plan with the study planner.
- Practise in timed 25-minute sets using the Pomodoro timer.
- Revise English, general knowledge, current affairs, Pakistan studies and basic maths regularly.
After you are selected
Expect document verification, medical examination and police verification before the appointment letter. Keep the original documents safe. If you are planning your finances before joining, see how a loan fits with the loan EMI calculator and how tax affects your pay in the income tax calculator. Government schemes that may help your family are explained in our schemes section.
Frequently asked questions
Where should I look for genuine government jobs?
On the websites of the public service commissions and the department or force that is hiring, and in the national newspaper advertisements they publish. Use the table above.
Do I have to pay to apply for a government job?
Official recruitment charges, where they exist, are a published application or test fee paid through the channel named in the advertisement, typically a bank challan or an online payment on the official site. Never pay an individual or agent who promises a job.
How do I check my age eligibility?
Read the age limit and the cut-off date in the advertisement, then use our age calculator with that date.
What documents do I usually need?
CNIC, domicile, educational certificates and transcripts, experience letters if required, passport-size photographs and a valid email and mobile number. The advertisement lists exactly what is required.
Are the websites in your table official?
They are the addresses we believe are official as of our last review. Confirm the address in a recent newspaper advertisement before submitting personal data.
